Description
Contemporary Modern
Instructor: Loren Groenendaal
Tuesdays 6:30-8:00 pm
Class Dates: May 13th–June 10th (5 week session)
Class Description:
- This unique Contemporary Modern dance class is both creative and somatic. Each class includes technical skills and creative opportunities. Imagery and anatomical cues propel our movement and understanding of our bodies. The movement vocabulary comes from teacher Loren Groenendaal’s choreographic interests connected to her work with Vervet Dance. The movement is contemporary with influences from Modern Dance, Release Technique, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Developmental Movement, Laban Movement Analysis, and sometimes Hip Hop and classical Balinese Dance. This class provides opportunities for understanding of your body, building coordination, harnessing your strength, moving more ease-fully, learning movement from others, and exploring one’s own movement signature and interests.
- The Spring 2025 session will focus on movement inspired by water which will support moving fluidly, like a gentle stream, sequentially like a powerful wave, and potentially other modes as water has many states. We will also explore weight shift in the more typical way of taking steps, but also in shifting our position and feeling our mass shift and pour for both more grounded and buoyant expressions.
- This class includes floor work, but is not exclusively a floor work class. There will be standing work and level change. Dress as you are comfortable, knowing the space has air conditioning and has a smooth wood floor. A shirt that covers your shoulders and pants that cover your knees and potentially knee pads are recommended. This is a mixed level course. Loren will provide support and modification or further challenge depending on student readiness.
